Let’s face it, sometimes we all feel like we are mentally unwell. Emotional trauma, job stress, financial stress, relationship stress and any number of other factors can make us depressed or anxious to the point it’s barely possible to function. When these emotional stresses are prolonged, many people will say, “I feel like I’m going nuts!”
You know you can’t think straight when you’re emotionally stressed. Even simple problems can seem too much to deal with and you’re forever on edge, knowing that just one more thing will send you into a nervous breakdown. And it’s easy to spiral downward until you can barely get out of bed. However, if you learn a few mental wellness techniques, you’ll soon be feeling normal and happy again.
Mental wellness is the state of mind where you can function optimally. That’s the short version. The long version is that your psychological and emotional state is calm and relaxed, allowing you to use rational thinking (instead of reacting emotionally) to engage in creative problem-solving; function in society; be emotionally stable; and meet the demands of everyday life and be able to handle the unexpected. In other words, ideally, you are the eye of the storm. You are calm and in control of yourself no matter the chaos around you. That’s the ideal scenario. Achieving that state of being IS possible; but to start with, let’s work on regaining your equilibrium.
You may have heard about the power of the mind when it comes to healing. Modern medicine is finally catching on to the fact that mental wellness is just as important – and contributes to – physical wellness. That’s why holistic approaches to healing are becoming more common. Instead of handing out prescriptions and treating physical symptoms, doctors are increasingly treating the patient’s mental/emotional state as well.

The mind/body is an inseparable entity; it is the whole; yet modern medicine has treated the body as a separate entity from the mind – which it is not. The patient’s mental state affects physical well-being, and vice versa. Of course mental wellness is essential to everyday existence too, not just for when you’re sick or injured. The same principle of unity applies to your relationship with the world: every situation affects you, and you affect every situation. Things happen THROUGH you, not TO you.
To take charge of your mind and prevent emotional stress from “messing with your head” means that you will consciously decide how to let a situation affect you (if at all) and how you will respond. This means you will be fully in control of both the way you perceive things, the way you feel about them and the way you respond to them. In addition, you will want to take extra good care of your body to promote physical well-being. The result will be complete mental wellness!
Taking Control and Improving Your Mental Wellness
There is a solution. You CAN learn to take control of your mind so that mental wellness is the norm and life is fun and enjoyable again. The Silva Method is full of self-mastery exercises that will:
- Enhance your creativity: when you relax into the alpha brainwave state, you become more intuitive and creative. Functioning in the alpha state is essential for learning self-mastery and it is at the core of every Silva exercise.
- Enable you to monitor and control your thoughts and your emotions while meditating; and apply this self-awareness and self-control in any situation.
- Empower you to choose positive thoughts and emotions whenever you are feeling negative.
- Give you a sense of self-worth and confidence (that comes from self-mastery – when you control your thoughts, emotions and actions, you feel more control over the situation).
- Help you focus so that even occasional strong emotions won’t interfere with your concentration.
- Help you see things from a different perspective.
- Help you creatively visualize a positive outcome to ALL problems you’re having. Here’s how to visualize a positive outcome to any situation: http://www.silvamethodlife.com/better-visualization-with-the-silva-method/
- Help you become more self-aware, including awareness of self-limiting beliefs; and give you the tools to change those beliefs.
- Give you the self-mastery to control stress (becoming stressed out about an event is a choice – an unconscious choice but a choice nonetheless); you can learn to choosing to NOT allow something to stress you out.
- Enable you to think clearly, organize your thoughts, think rationally and logically, and avoid making rash emotional decisions.
- Give you a sense of unity with others: compassion and empathy for others go a long way in promoting mental wellness within you because you learn to stop feeling like a victim of other people’s actions; as a result, relationships are improved.
- Help you create new thought habits that are aligned with your goals, instead of automatically defaulting to self-sabotaging thought habits.
- Help you take responsibility for your life with the realization that what you think, you become; or, what you think about, comes about.
- Help you develop belief in the power of thought energy and your role in creating your circumstances by improving your creative visualization and self-reprogramming skills.
- Help you understand and forgive yourself; as you realize that most of your actions are unconsciously driven by your beliefs (which were also adopted unconsciously); knowing that you don’t own these beliefs, that you didn’t choose them consciously, helps you release them and build a belief system that suits you and your goals.

Hopefully you are feeling much more hopeful about your ability to take charge of your life. Mental wellness is just a few exercises away!
Meditation is an effective way to maintain a sense of calm. Just 15-30 minutes a day of meditation will boost your feel-good hormones, relieve stress and teach you even more self-mastery.
Mental wellness is essential to living a balanced, healthy and happy life. Give your mental state the attention it deserves and you’ll be able to enjoy all that life has to offer, AND deal with life’s big and the little ups and downs and unexpected events.
